Tuesday Tracks: Your weekly new music discovery

Every week, there’s a plethora of new music at our fingertips.

Artists on platforms such as Spotify and Bandcamp are plentiful, and the radio offers a steady deluge of new singles, but who has time to sort through all that? RIFF does!

We pooled our resources to find some of the best new singles from all genres and backgrounds, so you can find your newest earworm without all the drama. Enjoy this week’s hidden gems:

The Tin Can Collective, “A Different Light” – We all have days when we feel out of sorts, and The Tin Can Collective gets it. In their new single, “A Different Light,” the Long Island indie rockers sing of mixed feelings and the uncertainty that comes with liking someone. The guitars sometimes rage and sometimes glimmer, reflective of racing thoughts. With hazy tones, “A Different Light” casts a nostalgic glow that gives you comfort whether you needed it or not. The track is off The Tin Can Collective’s upcoming album, Skeletown, which will be out Oct. 6.

Daniella Mason, “Cruel Summer” – If you’re like me, the return of pumpkin-spiced everything was a sudden wake-up call that summer is over. Daniella Mason’s “Cruel Summer” is a ridiculously fun anthem to wave goodbye to the season. Although she sings of a love turned sour, Mason owns her solo status with blithe vocals and a catchy melody. The Nashville songstress will have a self-titled album out on Oct. 13, but she’s no stranger to the pop scene, having already toured with Demi Lovato and DNCE.

Glances, “SEM” – For a band that formed by accident, Glances knows how to put a rad sound together. In the track “SEM,” the group mixes ambient vocals with colorful ‘80s-inspired synths that, together, sound straight out of a dream. This is the first single off of the Chicago group’s upcoming album, I Feel Very Close to You Right Now, which will be released Oct. 20. If “SEM” and the aesthetic album title are any indicators of what’s to come, then cool vibes are bound to be in store.

Covey, “Call Home” – The rawness and melancholy of Covey’s sound instantly drew me to “Call Home.” What starts with desolate vocals and tender guitar strums later builds up to bright, twinkling synths. The whimsical transition feels like a movie scene where you’re the protagonist having your coming-of-age-moment. “Call Home” is the lead single off the Boston-based band’s LP Haggarty, which was released on Sept. 22. A mix of folk rock, indie and pop-punk, the rest of Covey’s album is sure to be as heartfelt.

Baths, “Yeoman” – Since 2013, Baths has only created the theme song for video game Dream Daddy. “Yeoman” is the lead single off Baths’s third album Romaplasm, which will be out Nov. 17. It features Will Wiesenfeld’s poetic synth progressions and dreamy lyricism, but strays from the dark themes of his previous record, Obsidian, to explore a much brighter sound. Baths was actually the first show I ever shot, and I’m really excited to hear how his musical ideas evolved over time. But whether you’re an old fan or new, the rich and playful tones of “Yeoman” will make you feel warm inside.

Chloe’s Pick – I love the new Baths song, “Yeoman.” I got into Baths after they played at my university during my freshman year. Obsidian had just come out, so the Baths I grew to know and adore was a broodier version, but equally creative on synths. “Yeoman” kind of takes on the more upbeat elements of Cerulean, Baths’s first LP, but with smoother tones. It makes me happy to hear Baths sound so refreshed and regrown, and to see Morgan Greenwood (who plays alongside Wiesenfeld) included as an official member behind the moniker.
